Salary Negotiation

I am very happy that I watched the salary negotiation webinar because I believe it provided a ton of useful information and at a time when I needed it most. I learned the 3-steps of assessment prior to negotiating a salary: honestly assess yourself, your needs and research the company and industry. To assess yourself, review your GPA (which I have worked hard for but have been told that employers typically don’t look at this), your related experience/employment history, if you’ve travelled/are globally savvy and more. Essentially, it’s important to assess what you have to offer a company and what makes you unique. To assess your needs, resources such as azcis, salary.com and asu.edu/gradstats were recommended. When researching a company, look for their corporate history and mission statement/goals, competitors and if they have different locations. Aside from the 3-step model, I learned it’s key to understand what points are negotiable and non-negotiable in an offer. A few additional helpful tips included: wait 24 hours to accept a job offer, negotiate everything at once and clarify if the employer is indeed offering you a position.

One point I didn’t quite understand was to only negotiate once you are ready to take the job. I thought one of the main takeaways from negotiating was for the employee to see what the outcome could potentially be; in order to determine if they want to move further. Another point the instructor brought up was not to include your personal reasons of why you are negotiating into the conversation. My parents told me the exact same thing so it was funny to see that this point was mentioned.

After the webinar, I checked out the “reality check” on azcis where I realized I was not being offered anywhere near what I’ll be needing to pay for. I also looked at outcome and rankings of employment on asu’s website. Overall, this webinar provided me with a ton of applicable information. I just had a conversation with my internship boss about a job offer and I wish I had watched this beforehand so I could have been more prepared.
