The first career I researched was a Yelp Recruitment Marketing Strategist. I have heard that Yelp has a great company culture and is a service that I personally always use so I was intrigued when I saw the job posting. Unfortunately, the hiring individual did not include their contact information and Yelp’s site didn’t have it so I made it out to the “hiring professional”. I have a ton of experience in marketing and social media so I wanted to emphasize the skills I have already learned in relation to the job’s responsibilities in my cover letter. In the job description it stated that the recruitment marketing strategist would be responsible for creating social content across all of Yelp’s channels so I wrote that I have gained practices in doing this along with researching social trends to improve social strategy. I ended the cover letter reiterating that I believe my skills and knowledge could help their department grow.

The next career I came across on Handshake was an Account Manager at Big Rhino. Aside from switching up my introduction, for this cover letter I decided to go with a bullet list approach because their entire job description was listed out as well. I reviewed their list of responsibilities and picked out what I had the most experience in. Although these skills are already listed out on my resume, I thought it was important to almost bullet point what I have to offer versus what they are looking for. For example, I included experience in researching different industries and trends and ability to partner and collaborate with a diverse range of resources and personalities.

In conclusion, I have learned the true importance of matching what the job’s responsibilities or qualifications are to my experience in the cover letter. I will definitely be customizing the cover letters I send in the future instead of just changing out the company name and position like I’ve done in the past.
