The webinar series I decided to watch is called “Resumes and Cover Letters”. I feel that my resume is complete but I know that I can always improve and I wanted to compare my current resume to what is recommended by the professionals in these videos.
In the overview, I learned not to use a template. This is something I have heard multiple times but haven't acted on, because I use a template. I understand companies san dozens of resumes that pick out keywords and templates don’t always work for this. However, the companies I am typically applying for are small, so I’m assuming they aren’t receiving endless resumes and actually look through what is sent in. Also, I think this only applies to certain industries. From a marketing and social media perspective, I want to stand out and show my style; I’ve also gotten compliments from employers on my resume. I also learned that it’s okay to use color, especially if you are applying to a job that requires design, although I don’t think I ever would.
For contact information, it was recommended to use our asu.edu email address, but I’ve also heard not to use this once you have graduated. I do not include my home address on my resume but it is listed on the cover letter. I honestly don’t understand why this even needs to be listed, a city and state would make sense but I sometimes feel weird having my address on there. For the education section, I learned to spell out “Bachelor of Science” and to include my GPA (only if it’s above a 3.0), which is great because that is something I actually want to highlight. I listed the date of my education as I would a job (August 2015-Current), but it was instructed to only list the graduation date. I have my Dean’s List achievement listed under my “activities” section, which now that I’m thinking about it doesn’t make sense. I also didn’t include the number of semesters I’ve earned this achievement.
My experience section meets most of the requirements, except that I don’t have it listed in reverse chronological order (with the most recent at the top). I was also pleased that I am filling out my cover letter properly. As you can tell, there are some changes I need to make to my resume after watching this webinar series.
